What is Carbon Neutral?
Carbon neutral means just that: actual emissions into the atmosphere are balanced with actual emissions "removed" from the atmosphere. For carbon neutral organizations or events, this means that the full amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases (GHG) directly and indirectly emitted through its activities have been identified and offset. The carbon neutral designation is reserved for companies and events that want to take their commitment to the environment to the next level. The process starts with a rigorous GHG inventory to determine the baseline emissions level. The asset by asset, activity by activity emissions profile that results then forms the basis of a detailed reduction strategy. In many cases, this allows the company to save money through energy efficiency measures that come to light. Finally, the organization or event then purchases high quality carbon offsets for the remaining emissions.
What is Climate Friendly?
We introduced the "climate friendly" designation recognizing that not every company or event is ready to engage us to comprehensively assess their climate impact, invest in reduction measures, and offset the balance. Many companies have limited resources available and want to maximize their climate benefit quickly rather than spend these resources in first getting a detailed picture of their actual emissions. In some cases, this means just offsetting key business activities such as organizational travel or freight. In other cases it means doing a "self-audit" of their emissions generating activities and working with us to get a ballpark estimate of emissions.
Offsetters provides a range of calculation tools to help companies or events become "climate friendly", including: provision of emissions calculation tools to help companies and event planners to do a self-audit; and collaboration with travel agents to track flight emissions based upon monthly travel records.
